MTA NYC Transit (NYCT) serves more than 5 million subway customers and 2.5 million bus customers on an average weekday. Its 48,000 employees provide mass transit and paratransit service throughout the five boroughs of New York City, including operating almost 6,400 subway cars at 472 stations. The NYC Transit Department of Subways Division of Elevators & Escalators is responsible for the maintenance, repair and inspection of 270 Elevators and 191 Escalators. The Division of Elevators & Escalators is seeking experienced talent that has the desire and the ability to assess and solve the challenges of maintaining and upgrading the NYC Transit vertical transportation system. Under supervision, the Elevator & Escalator Maintainer will perform frequent and routine maintenance and inspect, test, alter and repair electric and hydraulic passenger and freight elevators, escalators, and associated electro-mechanical equipment, in NYC Transit stations, shops and buildings; prepare report and operate a motor vehicle. Other related work includes, but is not limited to the following: • Maintain, install, inspect, test, alter and repair electrical and mechanical equipment, such as elevator cabs, doors, rails, cables, ropes, sheaves, governors, bumpers, safeties, overloads, relays, door control, step treads and associated elevator and escalator control equipment; • Utilize power machines, power and non-power hand tools, test meters; and my also fabricate parts; • Utilize schematic diagrams, technical manuals and drawings to perform work; • Cleans and lubricates all components of hydraulic and electrical elevators and escalators; • Keeps records, prepares and submits reports, and performs mathematical calculations • May inspect new equipment and material at manufacturing plants Education and Experience Requirements: 1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience at the journey level (i.e., fully-trained, knowledgeable, proficient and competent mechanic) in the maintenance, inspection, testing, alteration and repair of electric and hydraulic passenger or freight elevators, escalators, and associated electro-mechanical equipment. One year of this experience may be substituted with two years of helper experience, or completion of relevant training from a vocational high school, trade or technical school, college or university; or 2. Successful completion of a four-year, full-time apprenticeship in the construction, repair and maintenance of elevators, and/or escalators recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor; or any apprenticeship council that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. License Requirements At the time of appointment, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
